The first German settlers in Fredericksburg (1846) were granted town lots as well as outlying acreage for farms. Eventually, on the town lots, they built "Sunday Houses," small frame or rock houses they used primarily on weekends when they came to town to attend church, shop, and visit friends. Sometimes, the houses were used by children attending school, by ill family members who needed medical treatment, or by farmers as retirement homes. Frame Sunday houses had from one to three rooms and often a sleeping loft, which could be reached from the inside or outside using a ladder and later, outside stairs.
