Chisos Mountains at Twilight

John Grey

The palette is
red, yellow, blue and purple,
the subject, ghosts.
Sky turns to shale
as colors streak the slopes
north of the Big Bend.
Petroglyphs, dugouts, caves
leave with the day.
Details are phantoms
flitting from rock to rock,
cliff to crevice,
breaching the twilight boundary
between worlds.
The Chisos rids itself
of all that has no business here.
It is all haunting.
No longer mountains
but the outline of fear
against night.
